Harold V  Neilson – Appeared in his own touring company’s
1917 UK production of Doyle’s play The Speckled Band.
Dennis Neilson-Terry – English actor who appeared in
Doyle’s second play, The Crown Diamond, a one-act melodrama
first performed at the London Coliseum on 16 May 1921 for a
week (followed by another week in August).
Alwin Neuss – First seen as Holmes in the 1910 Nordisk
Films Kompagni production of The One Million Bond (UK: The
Stolen Legacy or Sherlock Holmes’s Masterpiece). In 1914 he began
a series of German adaptations for Vitascope GmbH. The Hound
of the Baskervilles (1914) was a fairly prestigious production,
with sets designed by the Expressionist Hermann Warm who
four years later worked on The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. It was
followed by three far-fetched sequels: The Isolated House
(1914), The Uncanny Room (1915) – up against a rival produc-
tion (see Eugen Burg) – and How the Hound of the Baskervilles
Arose (1915). A stand-alone story, A Scream in the Night,

sequels were released c.1920 – Dr Macdonald’s Sanatorium and
The  House Without Windows – but casting details are scarce.)
John Neville – Shakespearean actor who starred in A Study in
Terror (1965), an impressive British film produced by
Compton-Tekli in conjunction with Sir Nigel Films, a company
formed by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Estate to film the late
author’s stories. The plot has Holmes fighting Jack the Ripper,
and the film remains one of the best big-screen adaptations,
due mainly to James Hill’s convincing direction. Neville also
appeared in the American production of the 1974 Sherlock
Holmes revival (see John Wood).
