the UK, to avoid clashing with the popular Stoll series starring
Eille Norwood.
St John Beecher – Toured the UK provinces with The Bank of
England from 1900 (see John F Preston).
Harry Benham – American actor who played the title role in
Thanhouser’s 1913 film Sherlock Holmes Solves The Sign of Four
(UK: The Sign of Four).
Grendon Bentley – Appeared in the UK provincial tour of
Doyle’s play The Speckled Band from September 1910.
Carlyle Blackwell – Busy American matinee star of the
1910s and 1920s, Blackwell had the privilege of starring in the
last silent Sherlock Holmes film, 1929’s The Hound of the
Baskervilles (Erda-Film-Productions GmbH). Made in Berlin,
the production featured an eclectic cast of German, Italian,
Russian, English and American actors. It was scripted by
Richard Oswald, responsible for the first Hound film adaptation
in 1914 (see Alwin Neuss).
