Sherlock Holmes

Hans Albers – One of the leading German actors of his time,
he starred in The  Man Who Was  Sherlock  Holmes (1937, UFA), a
bizarre comedy in which Holmes and Watson meet their
creator Arthur Conan Doyle.
Joacquim de Almeida – Portuguese actor who starred as
Holmes in the 2001 Brazilian/Portuguese co-production The
Xango from Baker Street, detailing the theft of a Stradivarius
violin in Rio de Janeiro.
Georg Årlin – Swedish actor who starred in The Three  Students
(27 December 1959) and The Golden Pince-Nez (3 January
1960) for Swedish Channel 1 television. A decade later, The
Hound of the Baskervilles was shown on the same channel from 9
January to 6 February 1971.
Felix Aylmer – Distinguished British stage actor who
appeared in the play The Holmeses of Baker Street by Basil
Mitchell (in which Holmes is seen to have a daughter). It was
first performed at the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, on 23
January 1933 followed by several months’ touring.
Tom Baker – Extrovert former Doctor Who, miscast as Holmes
in a four-part BBC production of The Hound of the Baskervilles
produced by Barry Letts. It was shown on 3–24 October 1982.
Baker later appeared in the stage play The Mask of Moriarty
(October 1985) at the Gate Theatre, Dublin, for 51 perform-
ances (playing Holmes and Moriarty).
Alec Baldwin – Hollywood actor who starred in Steve
Lawson’s adaptation of A Study in Scarlet presented at the
Williamstown Theatre  Festival, Williamstown, Massachusetts
from 12–23 August 1987.
John Barrymore – Philadelphia-born charismatic 1920s
matinée idol who eventually abused his talent through alco-
holism and became too unreliable to employ. Dubbed the
‘Great Profile’, he was launched as Sherlock Holmes by Sam
