Henry S Dacre – Replaced John Webb in the 1894 stage
play Sherlock Holmes by Charles Rogers, later appearing on the
UK tour of William Gillette’s  Sherlock Holmes from 26
December 1901.
James D’Arcy – Charismatic young British actor who played
Holmes to Roger Morlidge’s Watson in the dire American TV
movie  Sherlock  (aka A Case of Evil), also featuring Vincent
D’Onofrio as Moriarty.
Hamilton Deane – Appeared in his own company’s UK tour
of William Gillette’s play Sherlock Holmes from 1923.
Geoffrey Edwards – Starred in the 1953 revival of a revised
version of The Return of Sherlock Holmes at the New Theatre,
Bromley, from 20 January.
Walter Edwards – Starred in a well-received American stage
version of The Sign of Four, first produced at the West End

Stig Ericsson – Played Holmes in two episodes of Swedish
Channel 1’s series Master Detectives and Other Smart People
(broadcast 26 and 28 September 1967).
Rupert Everett – British actor with matinee idol looks who
starred in Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking by Alan
Cubitt, a Tiger Aspect production for the BBC that aired on 26
December 2004. A sequel to the 2002 version of The Hound of
the Baskervilles, Ian Hart reprised his role as Watson.
Hugo Flink – German actor who appeared in a series of films
made by Kowo-Film AG, Germany. Due to the First World War,
their release was delayed by several years.The somewhat sensa-
tional titles were The Earthquake Motor, The Casket, The Snake
Ring (all 1917) and The Indian Spider (1918).
Francis Ford – American  character  actor, brother  of
Westerns director John Ford, who appeared only once as
Holmes in a 1914 adaptation of A Study in Scarlet by Gold Seal
(Universal), scripted by his wife Grace Cunard.
Barry Foster – Tousle-haired lead actor in minor roles, he
took on the mantle of Holmes for a 13-part BBC Birmingham
series of adaptations, aired from 4 June to 27 August 1978.
Matt Frewer – Lanky American actor, famous for playing
Max Headroom in the early 1980s, who featured in four child-
friendly stories for Canadian film company Muse Enter-
tainment. Three canonical adaptations – The Hound of the
Baskervilles (2000), The Royal Scandal (2001, based on A Scandal
in Bohemia) and The Sign of Four (2001) – were followed by a
new one by Rodney Gibbons, The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire
(2002). All four co-starred Kenneth Welsh as Watson.
Martin Fric – Czech actor who appeared in Lelicek in the
Service of Sherlock Homes (1932), made by Elektafilm AS,
Czechoslovakia.
