CONCLUSIONS: CREATING THE BALANCE
Neuropsychological assessment of children is
a specialist, complex process, and it is time-
consuming. It can take at least a half-day or
commonly longer to get an appropriate history,
select, administer and score several tests, complete
a clinically relevant report and provide feedback
to the child and family. Given the pressures on
health-care budgets, the time and other resource
costs of such a process are likely to be questioned.
While recognizing the importance of such issues,
the primary task of the neuropsychologist remains.
This is to ensure that the assessment is sufficiently
comprehensive and accurate, and that it responds
to the needs and concerns of the child, the family,
and the requests of the referrers. This will enable
the assessor to take account of the strengths and
neuropsychological difficulties of the child in
planning intervention, education and care.
