Attachment and separation
the form of worries about the vulnerability of
loved ones.
Adolescence
Grief takes various forms, including withdraw-
ing from family activities and/or seeking peer
support. Adolescents may challenge their own
mortality with risk-taking behaviour such as alco-
hol or drug use. Their cognitive ability to review
their prior relationship with the deceased may
bring comfort or, for those troubled by guilt or
regrets, increased distress. They may acquire new
family roles and responsibilities and encounter
expectations of overmature behaviour. A sense of
responsibility, alongside a desire to protect griev-
ing adults, may result in disguised grief and mixed
messages to others.
