In the 19th century, Baron Carl von Reichenbach coined the word 
od
 to refer to the force that pervades the universe—which he 
believed was particularly manifested in magnets and crystals. 
Why 
od
? The baron’s own answer: “Everyone will admit it to 
be desirable that a unisyllabic word beginning with a vowel 
should be selected.” Well, jeez, if 
everyone
 will admit it, then 
by all means.
