Mandate of KEMRI 
KEMRI was established in 1979 under the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act.   
Under this Act, the Kenya Medical Research Institute was charged with the

responsibility of carrying out health research, and their mandate under the Act is as 
follows:

To carry out research in the field of biomedical sciences 
¾
 
To co-operate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in 
training programmes and on matters of relevant research 
¾
 
To liaise with other research bodies within and outside Kenya carrying out similar 
research 
¾
 
To disseminate research findings 
¾
 
To co-operate with the Ministries responsible for research, such as the Ministry of 
Health, the National Council for Science and Technology, and the Medical Science 
Advisory Committee on matters pertaining to research policies and priorities 
¾
 
To do all such things as appear necessary, desirable or expedient to carry out its 
functions
