“Now in my job it is necessary to do a lot of week-ending…and as a result I have 
become fairly sensitive to unfamiliar atmosphere…and this one I was in now I didn’t 
like. The place smelled wrong. There was the faint, desiccated whiff of something 
troublesome in the air;…and I couldn’t help hoping that no pleasant things were going 
to happen before Monday came ”[Dahl, 1991: 549]. 
В абзаце содержится довольно много лексем с отрицательной коннотацией 
– атрибутивное словосочетание the faint desiccated whiff, прилагательные 
troublesome, no pleasant, глагол smelled wrong передают гнетущую атмосферу. 
Тем не менее ужин, на котором присутствовали ещё двое – майор Хэддок 
и Кармен ля Роза – прошел без происшествий: 
“At dinner, our hostess sat her two friends, Haddock and La Rosa, on either side 
of her. This unconventional arrangement left Sir Basil and me at the other end of the 
table where we were able to continue our pleasant talk about painting and sculpture. 
Of course it was obvious to me by now that Major was infatuated with her ladyship. 
And again, although I hate to say it, it seemed as though the La Rosa woman was 
hunting the same bird” [Dahl, 1991: 552]. Интригу создает глагол to hunt the same 
bird, который означает «охотиться за той же добычей» [АРС: 349].

were there, in bronze, granite, limestone, and wood, and although it was a pleasure to 
see them warming and glowing in the sun, to me they still looked a trifle out of place 
in these vast formal surroundings”[Dahl, 1991: 554]. 
Лексема a relief, глагол to get away from, атрибутивные словосочетания 
warm shining days, a bright surprising sun, причастные обороты warming and 
glowing in the sun с семантикой «солнечный свет», «тепло» противопоставляют 
атмосферу солнечного дня дому, из которого хотелось сбежать. 
Мужчины мирно беседовали, и в это время вдали появились две фигуры – 
мужская и женская, которые остановились возле одной из скульптур. Они 
смеялись, а затем мужчина начал фотографировать женщину возле скульптуры 
Генри Мура: 
“…I was watching the figure of a woman dressed in red moving along the 
flower-beds in the far distance… she came to another smaller lawn that was circular 
and had in its centre a piece of sculpture…The woman in the red dress had been joined 
now by a man.. The black object in the man’s hand turned out to be a camera, and now 
he had stepped back and was taking pictures of the woman beside Henry Moore…” 
[Dahl, 1991: 555]. 
Вдруг произошло неожиданное: женщина просунула голову в отверстие 
скульптуры, желая быть сфотографированной таким образом, однако просунуть 
голову обратно не представлялось никакой возможности: женщина застряла. 
Женщиной оказалась леди Тёртон, которая вместе с майором Хэддоком 
отправилась этим утром на прогулку. Мужчины поспешили на помощь. Майор 
Хэддок предложил разрубить скульптуру, однако сэр Тёртон был против: 
“Basil!” Lady Turton shouted, “Don’t be such a damn fool! Do something, can’t 
you?” She may not have been able to move much, but she could talk.
