Hand‘s rule - if more than one orbital is available for occupation by the
electrons currently being accommodated, then those electrons occupy separate
orbitals and do so with parallel spins. The occupation of separate orbitals
minimizes the repulsion energy between the electrons and hence leads to a lower
energy than if they were confined to the same region of space.
