Introduction
The interest, raised recently towards English language, the development of international relations on different levels has reasoned the desire to learn as much as possible about the country where this language originated as well as about its culture.
The literature is that magic key that opens the door of cognition of many sphere of human knowledge. It helps us to learn some interesting facts about t history, to know more about people's life in other countries. Sometimes, while reading a book, we can analyze actions of its' characters and it helps us to draw some certain conclusion. That’s why I find studying foreign literature is not only interesting, but also very useful.
In Great Britain, the turn of the XIX - XX centuries. was marked not only by the change of monarchs (the legendary Queen Victoria died in 1901), but also by the change of historical eras. The country gradually lost its former power at sea and in the colonies, a monopoly position in trade and industry. Feeling the competition of the USA and Germany, Great Britain directed its efforts to the conquest of Central Africa, Egypt, Sudan, and then unleashed the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902). These upheavals undoubtedly affected the situation within the state, where the ruin of free farmers, who supported agriculture, was in full swing. They moved to the cities, thereby replenishing the army of the poor.
The “good, old” Victorian age was leaving, it was replaced by a new one, filled with contradictions. The changes that took place in the economy and politics affected the spiritual state of society and, above all, literature. The unsteadiness of the worldview associated with social instability was not fundamental for the development of British art, which vigilantly guarded its national roots. "Englishness" during this period remains one of the most important characteristics of the creativity of the masters of the word, united by the search for a single spiritual principle at a turning point in the development of civilization.
The picture of the literary process of this period is very diverse, because realism, neo-romanticism, decadence, naturalism, etc. live and counteract in it, among which the realistic method in art still remains fundamental. This undoubtedly influenced the system of genres, in which the novel still occupies the leading place, the drama is significantly revived and the story is transformed.
