The subjective and the situational determinants of the successful 
posttraumatic re-adjustment of the combatants
The main features of the lifetime situation and the personality peculiarities of 
the victims of combat traumatic stress as the factors of the success of their 
posttraumatic re-adjustment were investigated in this longitudinal study. Population: 
45 male Russian Afghanistan war veterans. Each of them took part in two experimental 
sessions with the interval about five years between them. The aim of the study was 
to compare the role of the situational and the subjective determinants in the process 
of the stress regulation in the latter periods of the posttraumatic being. Procedure: 
on the basis of structured clinical interviews SCID and CAPS and a Global 
Assessment of Functioning Scale from SCID was determined the basic level of 
adjustment of our subjects and then we’d controlled the changing in their 
posttraumatic adjustment status and provided the assessment of the veteran’s 
personality and individual features (a main components of their cognitive mental 
schemas, locus of control, the capacity for volition and concentration on the activity, 
level of the personal anxiety and aggression, and cognitive styles- field dependency — 
independency, reflection — impulsivity, flexibility — rigidity, cognitive 
differentiation — integration). The factor and the comparative analyses of the results 
in the groups with improvement and changing for the worse in their posttraumatic 
state show, that the subjective determinants become the main determinants of the 
successful posttraumatic re-adjustment in the latter period of the posttraumatic 
being. By the way the situational features were more important in the earlier periods 
of adjustment.
