ETHNO-CULTURAL
BOUNDARIES AND MULTI-ETHNIC
FACTOR IN SEVENTH-CENTURY CULTURE OF
SOUTHERN BRITAIN
The principal attention in the article is directed on the analysis of the
ethno-cultural boundaries and multi-ethnic
influences in the seventh-
century Anglo-Latin culture in Southern Britain. The specific contact of
different Hiberno-Latin traditions (school of Maildub, hisperic culture)
with Roman-Byzantian innovations (Archbishop’s school at
Canterbury) in the sphere of education and ecclesiastical practice was
originally considered by famous Anglo-Saxon intellectual Aldhelm at
an individual level of personal perception. The learned monk
represented the contemporary ethnic cultures of Anglo-Saxons and the
Celtic (Irish and British) clergy in opposing categories.
The author
shows on epistolary facts that Aldhelm for the first time in Anglo-
Saxon England has formulated the Saxon ethno-cultural self-
consciousness on the Latin language. Aldhelm presented the political
ideas of imperial narrative for West Saxon kingdom in his panegyrical
treatise. Also the Anglo-Saxon author expressed the
dramatic picture of
educational travels in Ireland and religious pilgrimages to the Continent
and the Holy City in the poems and epistolary.
Keywords: Anglo-Saxon England, Anglo-Latin culture, Aldhelm,
multi-ethnic
influences, ethno-cultural self-consciousness, imaginary
geography, mental map.
