As an EFL teacher we must be interested in integrating culture to the teaching process. 
Including culture into teaching process helps to increase learners’ motivation. Lessons 
which are designed including cultural elements have a crucial role in achieving high 
motivation because most learners prefer activities such as singing, dancing, role

playing, or doing research on other countries and people which are based on culture. 
This is reinforced by Hammerly (1982) that teaching about the target culture when 
teaching the target language piques the interest of students and acts as a motivator. 
Cultural background knowledge influences language learning and teaching that helps 
teachers to take advantage of it. It may impact in the language learning and teaching 
skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. 
Teaching Materials for cultural awareness 
Various materials can be used in teaching culture in foreign language classes. Peterson 
and Coltrane (2003) suggested some instructional strategies to teach language and 
culture integrating culture in their language lessons.
1. The use of realia such as films, news broadcasts, television shows, websites, 
photographs, magazines, newspapers, restaurant menus, travel brochures, and other 
printed materials to engage the students in discussion of cultural issues
2. Teaching proverbs as a way to help students to explore the target culture
3. Having students role play dialogues based on cultural differences
4. Presenting objects such as figurines, tools, jewelry, or images that originate from the 
target culture.
5. Using literary texts as sources for learning culture.
