Ways to Protect Against Stress in Pregnant Women
1 trimester or "the kingdom of progesterone" - in the first three months of waiting
for a child, a large amount of progesterone is produced in a woman's body. One of its
functions is to create comfortable conditions for the attachment and development of
the ovum. But progesterone also has an effect on the nervous system: a woman
becomes calmer, somewhat apathetic and drowsy. She is less distracted by external
influences, looks more "deep" of herself.
Chronic stress during this period can lead to spontaneous miscarriage or
abnormal development of the fetus.
2 trimester - at this time, the placenta produces the enzyme 11β-Hydroxylase. It
blocks the passage of maternal glucorticoids across the placenta to the fetus. Those.
protects the unborn baby from stress hormones that are produced in the body of the
expectant mother.
But, unfortunately, they do not block 100%. If the experience is long-term or
chronic, then the mother's stress hormones are transferred to the fetus. Moreover,
negative processes will affect not only the metabolic processes of the future baby, but
also the development of his brain.
In the 3rd trimester, the enzyme 11β-Hydroxylase also works, which protects the
unborn baby. In addition, at this time, the subcortical structures of the brain of the
expectant mother are activated. A woman focuses on the internal state, and not on
external (often stressful) factors. Her intuition starts to work well. Increased maternal
stress levels can alter fetal brain maturation and lead to premature or low birth weight
babies.

Stress hormone and girls
The new study involved 108 women. Scientists assessed the level of stress in
each of them before conception and in the first weeks of pregnancy. The participants
underwent various psychological tests; they determined the cortisol content in their
hair. This method allows you to estimate your stress level over the past three months.
Pregnant women were monitored until delivery. High stress levels before
conception were associated with a doubling of the likelihood of having a girl. In women
who gave birth to daughters, the concentration of cortisol before conception and in the
first weeks of pregnancy was almost twice as high as in those who gave birth to boys.
