Types of listening 
In the methodology of teaching foreign languages there is a very large number 
of classifications of listening by type. The differences between these classifications are 
based on the fact that they are based on various criteria for distinguishing types of 
listening. Dehert I.A. offers the following theoretical grounds for highlighting the types 
of listening:
The presence of different listening functions in the learning process, for 
what purpose to listen, how to show your understanding, how to use the information 
received, etc .

The presence of different levels of listening comprehension: a) students can fully 
and accurately understand the text by ear; b) students can understand only the main 
content of the text, omitting the details. Features of the text for listening (linguistic, 
informative, and compositional). 
It should be noted that I.A. Dekhert, based on the foregoing, began to single out 
two types of listening: 1) with a general understanding of the content, 2) with a full

understanding of the content. Later, methodologists began to highlight a different type 
of hearing - with selective understanding of the content.
The soil. Bim writes: “Three types of listening can be distinguished: with full 
understanding (the speech of the teacher and fellow practitioners if it does not contain 
unfamiliar phenomena), with an understanding of the main content (for example, a 
hearing to identify genuine functional texts about what he says) with selective 
understanding (for example, listen to an ad to see if it’s relevant to you, or a weather 
report to see if it will rain.

The development of these three types of listening is the purpose of teaching this 
type of speech activity in accordance with the requirements of the state educational 
standard; therefore, we will consider in more detail the features of each of them.
Thus, 
these two classifications represent two different approaches to the description of one 
phenomenon and, therefore, do not contradict, but complement each other.
