: “But these days, like a 60-year-old lame old woman, wrapped herself 
in her blanket and turned away from me... The morning of the completion of the book dawned 
before noon on the sixth day of the month of Dhu’l-Qa’dah, 637 AH (= May 29, 1240).”
If this information is taken into account, it can be concluded that the scholar was still alive in 
637/1240 AH and was 60 years old. Hence, the death of the son Maǧd ad-Dīn in 632/1234-35, as 
indicated in other available sources, turns out to be incorrect. If the son completed this work on 
May 29, 637/1240 at the age of 60, then it can be assumed that his date of birth was around 
577/1180. Information about Maḥmūd al-Ustrūšanī can be found in the conclusion of his son’s 
work, 
Ǧāmiʽ aḥkām aṣ-ṣiġār
, too. 
The importance of the family environment in the formation of Ustrūšanīs scientific worldview 
was significant. It can be said that our author Maḥmūd was a successor of several generations of 
faqīh
s. Indeed, sources testify that his father, al-Ḥusain b. Aḥmad, was brought up in an educated 
family. The scholar lived in Ustrushana in the 12
th
century and made a worthy contribution to the 
development of jurisprudence.
According to Kefevî (d. 990/1582), the teachers of the Maǧd ad-Dīn al-Ustrūšanī are his own 
father Maḥmūd, Nāṣir ad-Dīn as-Samarqandī and his father’s teacher Marġīnānī (d. 593/1197)

This raises the question of whether two Nāṣirs existed and if the second of them, died after the 
Mongol invasion, as Sellheim had guessed. The copyist of 
al-Ǧawāhir al-muḍīya
also differentiated 
between two scholars but the publisher considered them to be one person.

Al-Ḥusain b. Aḥmad’s second son Burhān ad-Dīn was also a 
faqīh
and wrote a collection of 
fatāwā

According to sources, our author Maḥmūd’s father-in-law had the honorary title of “Šams al-
a’imma” (“Sun of the Imams”). Until the 13th century, at least four 
faqīh
s were awarded this title 
(Saraḫsī, Maḥmūd al-Ūzǧandī, Zaranǧarī and Ḥalwānī) in Central Asia.

The time the Ustrūšanīs family moved to Samarkand is also one of the topics that have been 
overlooked by researchers. Important information on this subject is given by Ḥāǧǧī Ḫalīfa.

this information it can be concluded that the family lived in Ustrushana until 603/1207. Maḥmūd 
and his family moved to Samarkand between 603/1207 and 616/1219 and settled there. At that time, 
his son Maǧd ad-Dīn was between 27 and 39 years old.
