MOONLIT NIGHTS
Translated by Abdiev Xudashukur, Nodira Azatova
If I remember my childhood, warm summer nights come to my imagination.
There was an almond tree in our yard. It used to blossom in early spring but it didn‘t
have fruits. Mum explained: ―It didn‘t give harvest because of its aloneness.‖ There
was ―supa

‖ under the almond tree. After the sunset Mum splashed water to our yard,
the smell of the ground that got hot with scent of basils spread fresh air, surroundings
became silent. Then thin moon appeared in the sky that was full of big stars. Mum
was staring at moon and whispered:
Oh, Moon, you are so beautiful,
Thanks to God for you,
May God be with us!
May we live a long life…
She smoothed my head saying that. The Moon ossified like it wanted to listen
this
song again, the stars were looking at with their thoughtful look and my mother
was telling tales.
The girl that disappeared inside the stones was singing a song with her tears:
Open stones, please open,
I wanted to see my mother, please open,
I missed her so much!
I‘ve chosen my own star in the sky. Look, mother, this is my star that is the
brightest among the seven brother stars…
- Well, my son. This is yours. That fourth one is mine…
- Why, mother, the fourth one is very little!
- That‘s why it is mine… The fourth star is orphan star. Did you see, it is too little
yet? We should take care of orphans.
The stars were mysteriously winking each other, brilliant
moon was mysteriously
looking at like spy, breeze was mysteriously whispering, basils and the ground were
mysteriously smelling, both sky and earth was full of mysteries…
Sometimes the star has flown as it was falling down. The star that was lighting
now suddenly had disappeared with its thin and light trace. My mother had frightened
and said:
- Oh… One poor passed way. I was afraid and embraced my mother. Then I prayed,
May the stars never fall
!
…
When I remember my childhood, I always imagine the warm summer nights. I
don‘t know, perhaps, at that time my mother firstly encouraged me to write.
I observe the sky that is full of stars. Perhaps, the brightest stars in the sky can
be all mothers‘ soul. May be, all those stars that fell down became the sun. Perhaps, it
might be the reason why we compare mothers to the sun.
