TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY TO ADULT LEARNERS

This article is about the importance of vocabulary learning
during foreign language teaching. Vocabulary is relevant to most adults
and you need to use context to get adults to learn it, thus making adult
English classes more interesting and more productive. While teaching, you
need to make it so that adults can continue to improve their English on their
own.
Key words:
vocabulary, working memory, repetition, teaching process,
root analysis, new words, adults.
Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and word meanings. As Steven
Stahl (2005) puts it, "Vocabulary knowledge is knowledge; the knowledge of
a word not only implies a definition, but also implies how that word fits into
the world." Vocabulary knowledge is not something that can ever be fully
mastered; it is something that expands and deepens over the course of a
lifetime. Instruction in vocabulary involves far more than looking up words in
a dictionary and using the words in a sentence[1].
So how can educators effectively teach vocabulary across grade levels
and content areas? Proper vocabulary instruction doesn‘t just teach the
definitions of words, but how to critically understand the context while
drawing connections outside the lesson plan. Studies have shown that
students who have a larger vocabulary tend to do well in school—and not
just in ELA, but STEM subjects, as well.
Challenges with Teaching Vocabulary
Teaching vocabulary can feel daunting. The struggles associated with
vocab practices in the classroom make it challenging for students to learn
and teachers to, well, teach. Teachers may have a hard time handpicking
the 10-20 words every week that their students will learn. Which words are
the most important? What about the students who learn and read at
different levels? From a student‘s perspective, it becomes difficult (and, for
many, uninteresting) to simply memorize words and terms that they have no
prior connections to.
