TEXT С. RECENT STUDI
OF TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS ES
(1) Today various ways to perfect and to speed up transportation in big cities have become an object of discussion among engineers and scientists.
(2) Most transportation experts consider underground tunnels the key to the successful solution of this problem. It is true that deep tunnel costs are very high now. But improved methods of boring—laser beams (луч), chemicals (химическое вещество) and others—would make tunnelling cheaper and essentially cut down the time of their construction. Underground tunnels would not be affected by the weather, that is why they would offer an efficient and safe way of carrying passenger transport.
(3) According to what some experts say it is desirable that these tunnels should be serviced by computer-controlled stream-lined capsules.1 Inside, you should push a needed button and the capsule would accelerate to a certain speed. Controlled by a distant computer, it would ride through a network of tunnels under the city and take the fastest route to your destination (место назначения).
(4) As to the realization of "the project, the proposed system seems acceptable for every element of this system is already within the limits of scientists' skills.

КОНТРОЛЬНЫЕ УПРАЖНЕНИЯ
1. Переведите предложения на русский язык.
1. If you want to determine the strength of a bridge, you should take into account the pressure of the wind on the structure. 2. Were the railway supplied with low voltage d.c, the substations would have to be located more closely to one another. 3. It is essential that the expenses on the renewal of superhigh-speed lines should be determined as soon as possible. 4. Some Japanese specialists suggest that all islands (острова) in Japan be linked by underwater tunnels. 5. The designer ought to have paid attention to the more rational arrangement of seats in his new car for tourists. 6. The electrical equipment on the electric locomotives is carefully insulated (изолировать) lest it should be dangerous for the locomotive crew to operate it. 7. Conventional locomotives could attain higher speeds provided the lines were strengthened and straightened (straight — прямой). 8. These valuable machines ought to have been protected from breakage. Unfortunately, some of them were delivered (доставлять) in a poor condition. 9. The railways demand that new hopper cars for hauling cement should be air- and waterproof. 10. The initial cost of railway electrification would have been impossible to reduce unless the prefabricated units had been applied to erecting structures for contact wires. 11. A pair of tunnels might not have been necessary hadn't the traffic been so dense. 12. The project of the Channel Tunnel was put forward in order that closer economic and cultural relations should be established between England and the Continent. 13. Had the carrying capacity of the bridge been determined more accurately, there wouldn't have been any need to consider the project again. 14 To protect trains against high waves which happen to occur in the sea the bridge should have been built of greater height. 15. One of the English designers insists that a bridge be built to link England and France. His numerous opponents, however, say that if a bridge were erected, the traffic would be affected by rain, storms and fog. 16. The air pressure could lower the speed of the trains riding on open sections, the stream-lined shape of both locomotives and cars, however, would reduce this effect to a minimum.
