Introduction

Work, organization and job design provide the basic 

ingredients for operating a business. But it is neces-

sary to see that these processes work well, which is 

the aim of organization development. In this chapter, 

organization development is defined and its some-

what chequered history is described, from its origins 

as ‘OD’  to  the  more  focused  and  businesslike  ap-

proaches adopted today. This leads to a discussion 

of organization development strategy and an exami-

nation  of  organization  development  in  practice, 

involving  the  use  of  diagnostics  as  the  basis  for 

preparing organization development programmes.
