KINGDOMS OF PONT
FROM HELLENISATION TO HELLENISM
The article is devoted to the development of Hellenism in Thrace,
the Kingdom of Pontus and at Bosporus, particularly how it was evident
in the process of state building there. The author comes to a conclusion
that the development of Hellenism in Thrace and the creation of Helle-
nistic state was going on with great difficulties. This region was not so
much developed in terms of social and political life, there were strong
and deep survivals of tribal division and tribal relations. Neither Mac-
edon nor Rome which had there own interests, were unable to create a
base for composing a strong centralized state of Hellenistic origin. On
the contrary, at Bosporus which became a part of the Pontic kingdom
under Mithridates Eupator, conditions for arranging a state of com-
pletely Hellenistic type had already been created under the Pontic rule.
It was developing there in accordance with the Hellenistic traditions of
the Kingdom of Pontus due to the policy of Mithridates Eupator. Rela-
tions which had been brought there by the Pontic king were actively
developing on the turn of our eara and during the first centuries of the
Imperial time. As a result Bosporus was turned into a typical Hellenistic
kingdom under the supervision of the Roman empire.
