SPEAKING
Throughout my career at The Sound Agency, my professional concern has
been the sound of organisations, brands and their spaces, such as malls,
airports, shops, offices, hospitals and places of education. I created a
scientific model that describes how sound affects people, and we helped
to move many organisations towards conscious design of sound instead
of unconscious creation of noise.
As time passed, I started to realise that it’s not just organisations that
make important sound. Human beings do too: your body can’t make
light, but it can, and does, make sounds, of which the most important is
speech. As I explored this aspect of sound, my TED talks started to focus
more on personal sound, and on interpersonal communication,
culminating in the fifth talk entitled ‘How to speak so that people want to
listen’. At the time of writing, that talk is in the top 10 most-viewed of all
time – with, interestingly, something like 9 times as many views as my
talk on conscious listening. This says something about the value we place
on sending as opposed to receiving! Epictetus’s adage about 2 ears and

one mouth (quoted in Chapter 3) seems to have been tossed aside… it
appears that, in the modern world, most people are much more
concerned about the effectiveness of their speaking than that of their
listening. I do hope you have received the central message of this book –
that in fact a balance between the 2 skills is essential, because they are so
interrelated. In order to be good speaker, I believe you must also be a
good listener.
Nevertheless, we now come to focus on powerful speaking. When I came
to assemble my thoughts and experiences into the content for that fifth
speech, I asked myself what were the foundations for speaking with
authority, power and effect. I reviewed my own experiences, both in
hundreds of talks on stage around the world and in personal
communication; I also reviewed some of the great speakers I’d had the
pleasure to watch live, and some of the most powerful speakers in history.
The result was HAIL: an acronym of the 4 cornerstones of powerful
speaking. The H stands for honesty; the A is authenticity; the I is integrity
and the L is love. Let’s explore them in more detail.
HONESTY
Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.

Honesty is the absence of falsehood. This sounds simple enough, but is in
fact extraordinarily challenging, because lying is part of human nature. In
her excellent book 
Liespotting: Proven Techniques to Detect Deception
and the fine TED talk that arose from it, Pamela Meyer recounts research
showing that on any given day we are lied to between 10 and 200 times,
and that strangers lie 3 times within 10 minutes of meeting each other.

We are all liars, even if most of them are relatively harmless white lies,
the kind that reduce friction and keep home and work from needless
upset and conflict: “I was just about to call you!”, “Of course you don’t
look fat in that!” or “So sorry, my spam filters got that email for some
reason.”
The scale of lying, and public tolerance for it, have definitely increased in
the past few decades. I remember a time when we held our politicians
(and indeed all professionals such as doctors, lawyers, teachers and
accountants) to the highest standard; when being caught in a lie was
sufficient cause for resignation or dismissal. Now we live in the post-truth
world, where inconvenient stories are dismissed as ‘fake news’ and we
have the interesting euphemism “I misspoke” to replace, and dilute to an
apparently acceptable level, the admission of lying.
Lying is so prevalent that it will help in our pursuit of honesty to
understand it – and to have compassion for some expressions of it.
Pamela Meyer distinguishes 9 motives for lying, 4 of which are ‘offensive’
(designed to advance our position) and 5 ‘defensive’ (designed to avoid
some sort of damage).
