straight
Politicians have always been the masters of deflection and obfuscation (a
lovely old word meaning the practice of making things unclear). Often
this is because they can’t, or don’t want to, answer a question in an
interview. In their defence, they are now facing journalists who have
become more and more aggressive, due partly to politicians’ deviousness,
and partly the public obsession with blaming and shaming – see the
discussion of being right in Chapter 2. As a result, the 2 groups are locked
in a grim dance that doesn’t really serve anyone. We hear interruptions,
soundbites, unfounded accusations, straw man fallacies, and often
complete avoidances, often preceded by “I’m glad you asked me that
question…” (because I’m now going to answer a completely different
one).
Being straight in your speaking means being frank – in other words,
saying what you mean. Many relationships at home and at work are
blighted by twin-track communication, where the frank conversation is
unspoken and what’s said is at best allusive (using suggestion rather than
explicit mention), at worst completely different from what is meant. The
famous scene from Woody Allen’s 1977 movie

where the 2
lead characters have an entire discussion without saying what they’re
thinking, with subtitles so that the audience can see the real conversation,
is so painfully funny because we all recognise that process.
Of course, sometimes it’s kinder or safer not to say what we’re thinking,
and I am not advocating removing the editor that works between your
mind and your mouth: not all our thoughts are worthy of being spoken
and we’ve all had the experience of saying something we later regretted.
However, I am suggesting that falling into the habit of indirect, allusive

speaking is something to be avoided. It requires mind-reading on the part
of the other person, which is hard work for them and will often be
inaccurate. Also, it tends to go hand in hand with a habit of meaning-
making because we assume that other people are the same and don’t say
what they mean either, so their speech requires decoding just like ours
does. These things give rise to misunderstanding and conflict because
they involve so much unconscious filtering and guesswork, often resting
on the assumption that others are just like us (which is not true) and
arising from a fear of being known or a need to be right that translates
into making others wrong. Remember, being judgmental or even
condemnatory in your meaning-making is Deadly Sin number 2!
Many people’s feelings of not being understood arises here. The fear of
being poorly received can itself produce indirect speaking that’s harder to
understand, producing a self-fulfilling prophecy. Equally, the need to be
right and justified can create speaking that demands mind-reading,
producing the desired feeling of righteous indignation when the other
person’s mind-reading is off the mark, as it often will be. If you recognise
any of this obliqueness in your own speaking, or you have relationships
where mind-reading is regularly necessary on either part, try the
exercises below.
If you want to be powerful in your speaking and fully understood, be
straight: say what you mean and mean what you say. Be steady, reliable
and unambiguous in your speech and people will learn that when you
speak, it’s worth paying attention.
