The advantage of using wiki for an online group project is in
1. Its capacity to track participation. Both students and the instructor could 
view the history of the page and see everybody’s posts stamped for date and time. 
This feature enabled me to accurately determine the individual contribution of each 
participant for assessment purposes; it also held group members accountable for 
their share of work on the project.
2. The ease with which students could incorporate classmates’ input to create 
and modify their lesson plans. Wiki provides a single common space to develop and 
store materials, which increases control, enhances consistency, and saves time.
3. A significant increase in involvement, analysis and reflection. The 
collaborative nature of wiki as well as simplified access and use prompted students 
to view and comment on other groups’ lesson plans. Although it was not required 
by the syllabus, students became active peer evaluators offering their observations 
of the content and organization of the lessons. Despite the amount of off-the-screen 
reading associated with an online course, they were willing to spend additional time 
at the computer to analyze their classmates’ projects.
4. The visual appeal of the end product. Wiki lesson plans resemble elaborate 
teaching websites with text, audio and video materials within a click of the mouse, 
only students did not have to master web-authoring tools to develop them.
Course evaluations revealed that students appreciated both the group lesson 
plan which provided “an opportunity to put into practice the principles and thoughts 
that we discussed and “was very practical and helpful” and the use of wiki which 
was described as “an excellent medium to share ideas and communicate.” Further, 
“it is modern and has practical applications for incorporating into the ESL 
classroom.” Concerning wiki one student said, “It is so much easier and more 
efficient than sending e-mail attachments,” referring to her previous experience with 
online communication. Not only did it ”make collecting and utilizing input from 
classmates easy”, but also “made me think and reflect more.” An opportunity to “to 
look at everybody’s lessons, view materials, and write comments from the same 
page” was another commonly cited benefit of wiki. The absence of any reservations 
about a wiki group lesson plan makes it a relevant activity in an online teacher 
education course.
