A LESSON PLAN ON USING WIKIS AND BLOGS IN ENGLISH CLASSES 
Purpose of the activity
To integrate group work into an online class and to increase student collaboration 
and involvement while practice lesson planning skills.

To practice how to plan a sequence of lessons for a beginning writing class

To create a detailed plan of instruction while seeing the big picture

Computers with Internet connection

A lesson plan assignment is attached
Activity
Students are assigned to groups of four to design a sequence of lesson plans 
with the focus on writing. Each group represents a mix of more and less experienced 
students as well as native and nonnative speakers of English to balance group 
dynamics. They have to work together to select a topic, choose their student 
population, and create lesson plans following a specific format. Each group member 
receives two grades: one is a group grade based on the quality of finished project 
while another is assigned individually based on the student’s contribution to 
planning and composing the lessons (Lehmann, 2004). They are given eight weeks 
to work on the project.
TESOL Resource Center 
Each group has its own Blackboard folder with a wiki, discussion board, and 
chat tool to work on the project. Because of the disparity in student schedules, most 
communication about the lesson plans is usually asynchronous. Some groups select 
a team leader who distributes responsibilities among all the participants and provides

overall monitoring; others collectively assign parts of the units to each member, and 
then collaboratively edit the lessons.
