Think about the sequence of events in the development of the electric guitar.
Guitar Mania
Guitars and similar stringed instruments have been around for many centuries. In the 1930s, a guitar 
company called Rickenbacker manufactured the first electric guitar. With the use of tungsten pickups 
(which allowed the guitar’s sound to be converted into electricity) and an amplifier, a regular acoustic guitar 
could be “plugged in” so that it could be heard even within the big band music of the 1930s and 1940s.
But it was not until 1941, when Les Paul came up with his solid-body electric guitar, that the popularity 
of the instrument really began to take off. Les Paul’s original electric guitar was very plain and simple—it 
was just a rectangular block of wood with a neck and steel strings. During the 1950s, a guitar company 
called Gibson introduced the Les Paul model electric guitar with the familiar rounded shape that is still 
manufactured today. This guitar quickly became very popular, and it is still going strong more than fifty 
years later.
In 1954, Leo Fender invented an electric guitar that became know as the Stratocaster. The “Strat” was 
significantly lighter in weight than the Gibson Les Paul, and it had a sculptured shape and used single-coil 
pickups. This guitar, too, became an immediate success and is still extremely popular.
By the 1960s, guitar players had discovered the true power of rock music. The addition of special-
effects gear, such as the wah-wah pedal, made it possible for electric-guitar players to create all kinds of 
new sounds. The electric guitar has become the core instrument of almost all rock bands.
