The Student Pen,
I want to congratulate you on the exciting new Web design of your paper. I have been an 
enthusiastic visitor since you launched the site three years ago. I was worried about having a new 
design, but it is easy to navigate, appealing to look at, and fun to read. You have created a 
vibrant forum where students can exchange information and share their thoughts. I am especially 
fond of the Student Snap of the Day photos that now appear on the home page. They present a 
fascinating view of what kids are doing around the world.
As happy as I am with the new design, I am writing today because I do have one serious 
complaint. Where is Lily Tsang’s column “Why Should I Care?” I was shocked to read on her 
blog that you asked her to stop writing for 
The Student Pen. Week after week, Tsang opened my 
eyes to difficult worldwide issues, such as political corruption or the need for medicines abroad. 
She never simply described a problem—she always made connections that helped me understand 
how these problems affected me and what I can do about them. Tsang’s column about visual 
pollution inspired me to launch a school campaign to reduce the amount of advertising on 
campus. The project won a Student Council Award, and it would never have happened without 
Tsang’s inspiration.
I strongly encourage you to bring back Tsang’s column—your site still needs it.
