Review the 
Sequence 
skill with students. Say: 
You can keep track of the sequence in a nonfiction 
passage by looking for dates or sequence signal words, such as before, after, or during. Paying 
attention to the sequence will help you better understand events from history. 
Then remind 
students of the 
Monitor Comprehension 
strategy. Say: 
Good readers go back and reread to ensure 
they fully understand a passage. Rereading is particularly useful when you are trying to track
a sequence. Some authors go back and forth in time, so pay close attention to when an event 
happened. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy 
practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
4
Remind students of the 
Sequence
skill. Say: 
You are going to read a fiction passage. In fiction, 
you can keep track of the plot’s sequence by thinking about what happens first, next, and last. 
Pay attention to key details that give additional information about the sequence. 
Then remind 
students of the 
Visualization
strategy. Say: 
As you read, pause briefly after each paragraph to 
visualize what is happening. Think about how the character and scene change throughout the 
story.
When students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy 
practice activities. Review the answers together.

Tell students they will practice both the 
Main Idea and Details
and 
Sequence
skills as they read 
about Chinese New Year. Remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension
strategy. Say:
