can help you determine the most important information.

Evaluate Evidence
skill. Say: 
If an author makes a claim, it’s important 
that he or she back up the claim with evidence. Authors can support their personal opinions by 
providing examples. These examples can help you determine whether you agree with an 
author. 
Then remind students of the 
Ask Questions 
strategy. Say: 
Not all of your questions can be 
answered by rereading a passage. Keep track of any unanswered questions you have in order to 
search for the answers at a later time. 
Then have students read the passage. When students have 
finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the 
answers together.

about a unique, new way to study garbage. Remind students of the
