Third-Party Presidential Candidates
For the past 160 years, presidential politics in the United States has been dominated by two major 
parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. From time to time, other parties have tried to challenge the two 
prominent groups. These so-called third parties usually form during times of great change or upheaval, and 
they often represent the desire for new ideas. Occasionally, a third party has made a respectable run for the 
office of president, but none has ever succeeded. Following are 10 of the most successful third-party bids.
