You are going to read about a 
woman who creates perfume. As you read, pause to ask yourself: Do I understand what I just 
read? If not, reread individual paragraphs or the entire passage.
Have students read the 
instructions at the top of the page and the passage. When students have finished, direct them to 
complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Review the 
Character and Setting
skill with students. Say: 
The setting is a very important part of 
historical nonfiction. As you read, think about where and when the events took place. Often, it 
can be difficult to understand a setting that is so different from the present day. Look for details 
that describe the way things looked or felt in the past. 
Then remind students of the 
Visualization
strategy (Week 3). Say: 
Looking for details that relate to the senses will help you make an accurate 
visualization of a historical experience.
Have students read the passage. When students have 
finished reading, direct them to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers. Then have 
students complete the strategy practice activity and share their sketches with the group.

Review the 
Theme
skill with students. Say: 
Good authors embed themes within their writing. As a 
reader, it is up to you to discover the theme, or moral lesson. As you read, think about what 
“bigger picture” message the author is trying to share with you.
Then remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension
strategy. Say: 
If you find that you are not engaged in a passage, it is useful 
to use another reading strategy to regain your focus. Think about which strategies might help
