READ THE PASSAGE
As you read, make inferences about what happened during and after the 2000 election.
Bush vs. Gore: Election 2000
In November of 2000, an unprecedented United States presidential election took place. When
George W. Bush ran as the Republican candidate against the Democratic nominee, Al Gore, the country
was closely divided. At the time of the election, President Bill Clinton (a Democrat) had been in office for
two terms. During that time, Gore had served the country as vice president. Previously, Gore had also
served in the Senate and the House of Representatives. George W. Bush had served as governor of Texas
and is the son of former president George H. W. Bush, who had served one term from 1989 to 1993.
Before the 2000 election, polls showed that the presidential race would be very close. Gore won
the popular vote, receiving about 500,000 more votes in total across the country than Bush did. However,
the electoral vote is what determines who becomes president. At first, newscasters projected Gore as
the winner, based on his winning the popular vote in Florida. Later on during election night, however,
newscasters retracted that call and declared Bush the winner, believing that he had won the state of
Florida. Even later that night, newscasters determined that the Florida contest was too close to call.
In the end, Gore lost the 2000 election by just five electoral votes. He demanded a hand recount
of ballots from Florida. However, when the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, the justices declared
that the manner in which the recount was being conducted was in violation of the United States
Constitution. The recount was stopped, and George W. Bush went on to serve two terms as president
from 2001 to 2009.
