A War Story
Julius joined the United States Air Force right after he graduated from college. It was 1943, and 
World War II was raging. He was sent to flight school and learned to become a tail gunner, which was one 
of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the war. Bomber planes in World War II had a turret in the back 
of the plane, a rotating structure in which the tail gunner sat and shot at enemy planes that were attacking 
from behind. The turret was very exposed—both to the enemy and to the weather. Julius was often fearful 
as he trained, but he persevered and became very good at his job.
Julius’s squadron went to England in 1944 and began flying enormous B-17s (also known as Flying 
Fortresses) across the English Channel to Germany, where they would drop their loads of bombs. It was 
Julius’s job to keep German fighter planes from attacking the bomber. His watch would stop working in the 
freezing air; often his fingers would be numb from the cold, and he eventually developed frostbite. Still, 
time after time, he climbed into the tail gunner’s turret when his squad had to fly. 
One day, the crew was told they would have to leave one man behind because of space concerns on 
board, so as the youngest, Julius stayed on the ground. The crew was shot down over Germany and was 
imprisoned for the rest of the war. Julius felt lucky but guilty. He was assigned to a new crew until the war 
ended. He was one of the fortunate ones—he survived with only frostbitten fingers and memories as his 
battle scars.
