Visual Information
skill with students. Say: Authors organize large quantities of 
information into simple graphics. Point out the graph, and review what the headings and the 
acid-level key mean. Emphasize that as the acid level goes up, the pH level goes down, and call 
attention to the numbers getting lower. Then remind students of the 
Organization
strategy. Say: 
The author of this passage has organized information about acid rain into a passage and a 
graph. As you read, think about why the author chose this form of organization. When 
students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. 
Review the answers together.

Tell students they will practice both the

and 
Visual Information
skills
by reading about orchids. Say: When you see footnotes, captions, and labels, read them to help 
clarify text and images. Then remind students of the

strategy. 
Say: There is different information contained within the passage and both diagrams. Study 
each closely, and think about which information is the most important in each one. Have 
students read the passage and study the diagrams. When students have finished, direct them to 
complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
