Freddy’s Dental Blues
My day started badly, and it just kept getting worse. First, the toaster decided to quit working for good, 
so I had to eat oatmeal for breakfast—with raisins! Everybody in the universe knows I hate raisins almost 
as much as I hate oatmeal, but there they were, staring up at me from the miserable glop like dead 
tadpoles. I looked around for a place to stash them and saw Max, our dog, looking at me with hunger in his 
eyes. Max never lets me down.
Then Mom said, “Don’t forget, you have your appointment with Dr. Stouffer today!”
“Oh, no!” I said. “Not Dr. Suffer!”
“Don’t call him that, Freddy,” Mom said. “He’s as gentle as a lamb.”
“Maybe a lamb with a power drill! Have you seen his instruments? They’re not for humans. They’re for 
some extinct race of giants with mouths the size of the Grand Canyon,” I said. “And he has boring 
magazines.”
“If you brushed and flossed more often, maybe you wouldn’t have so many dates with Dr. Stouffer’s 
drill,” Mom said. She had a point. “Look,” she said, “if you’re good at the dentist, I promise there will be a 
new toaster by breakfast time tomorrow.”
I knew deep down there was no way I could get out of my appointment with Dr. Suffer, and I was 
feeling some twinges back in my molars. Mom was right. All my bad dental habits were starting to catch up 
with me. I promised myself I was going to turn over a new dental leaf—and I meant it this time.
