Students look for the order of events or steps in a process.
DAY
1
Review the 
Main Idea and Details
skill with students. Say: Pause briefly after each paragraph to think 
about its main idea. When you have finished reading, use the main idea from each paragraph to 
figure out the main idea of the passage as a whole. Tell students they are going to read about acne 
research. Remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension
strategy (Week 1). Read aloud the 
instructions for the strategy practice activity. Then say: Underlining details as you read will help you 
organize and remember your thoughts about the research studies. Have students read the passage 
and complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together. Then have volunteers share what 
they underlined for the strategy practice activity. Discuss how these notes were helpful in locating the 
passage’s main idea.
DAY
2
Review the 
Main Idea and Details 
skill with students. Explain: Good writers include details that 
support and elaborate on their main ideas. It is important to comprehend the details accurately to 
understand the whole passage. Tell students they are going to read about an unusual musical 
instrument. Remind them of the 
Visualization
strategy (Week 3). Say: Look for details that tell you 
how the instrument looks and sounds. Close your eyes, picture what it would be like to play the 
instrument, and imagine the types of sounds it produces. Have students read the passage. When 
students have finished, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the 
answers together.
