by thinking about what happens to the main character first, next, and last. Breaking the sequence 
into three parts will help you see the big picture. Then, you can add additional steps into the 
sequence to include all of the story’s details. Remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension
strategy. 
Say: It can be difficult to keep track of a story’s sequence during the first reading. To remember all 
of the details accurately, go back and reread the entire passage. When students have finished 
reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.

Review the 
Sequence
skill with students. Say: When an author is writing to teach, he or she will often 
give directions in order from start to finish. You can keep track of the author’s instructions by 
looking for sequence signal words, such as first, then, next, last, or finally. Tell students they are 
going to read about how to properly kick a soccer ball. Then remind students of the 
Visualization
strategy. Say: As you read, make a picture in your mind of each step needed to kick the ball 
correctly. Have students read the passage. When students have finished, direct them to complete the 
skill practice activity. Review the answers together. Then have students complete the strategy practice 
activity on a separate sheet of paper and share their sketches with a partner.

Tell students they will practice both the 
Main Idea and Details
and 
Sequence 
skills by reading about 
iron and steel. Remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension
strategy. Say: As you read, look for
