Key words: Gender category, masculine, feminine, feminine in forms,
feminine in meaning,
real feminine,
figuratively feminine, ta marbutah, alif
mamdudah, alif maqsurah.
Like other languages gender category is considered to be one of the most
essential grammatical themes in arabic language . This term is available especially in
nouns and verbs and consists of two types: masculine (refers to words that relate to
men) and feminine (refers to words that relate to women). In terms of its usage, there
are several subtle points which need to be considered meticulously especially with
nouns while verbs owe some special features that might seem to be more complicated
than other languages.
Mustafo Galayiniy learned and divided feminine gender expressing into four
categories: feminine in forms, feminine in meaning, real feminine, figuratively
feminine. Words including ta marbutah, alif mamdudah and alif maqsurah are words
expressing feminine in forms:
Fatima-
Salma-
beatiful woman-*!-^
There are some Arabic words meaning masculine gender but the form shows
feminine sign:
Hamza- sj-^

Arabic language is full of grammar exceptions and indeed requires more care
and attention. For instance: some words really mean female gender no important what
its form:
Zaynab-
a bride - ^
j j
^
Real feminine category appears when a single word has its partner in another
gender category:
male teacher - ^
/ female teacher -4-*k«
male camel-
/
female camel - ^
The last version of feminine category is figurative form and learning this model
is easy by expressing into some typical types:
1.Names of some countries and cities:
Egypt -
Baghdad -
2. The double members of body parts:
eyes -
lxp
palm -
3. Types of winds, different names of hell and paradise:
breeze -
one name of paradise - ^
hell -
Around the world several languages come with grammar rules like gender
category but there might be some discrepancy among them. Particularly, this theory
appears in russian language when a word related to feminine in arabic language could
mean masculine in russian language or wise versa:
In Russian
In Arabic
book(feminine)
(masculine)book -
city (masculine)
(feminine)city
There two opinions regarding the rule stated above:
1) feminine in forms is contradicting with words of feminine in meaning;
