Combinatorial synthesis of oxide powders

E. Catalytic Activity

Several libraries of identical compositions were tested

for catalytic activity in the exothermic oxidation of CO

reaction in the temperature range of 150 to 350 °C. In-

frared thermal images of the library were taken to deter-

mine the amount of heat evolved by each sample during

the reaction. Figure 8 is a thermal image of the tempera-

ture change during the CO oxidation reaction at a reactor

temperature of 215 °C. Both the pure oxides exhibit neg-

ligible temperature increases under these conditions,

while most of the mixed oxides produce temperature in-

creases of 5 to 35 °C. These results will be described in

greater detail elsewhere.

Further tests are being per-

formed to better understand the effects of composition

and surface area on the catalytic activity of this system.

The differences in temperature observed in this diagnos-

tic test show that the modified Pechini method can be

used with combinatorial synthesis techniques to produce

active catalyst oxide powders.
