Cultural, educational and sports goods industry

4.10.1 Overall scale and distribution


In February 2008, there were 4,054 enterprises in cultural, educational and sports goods industry. The number of employees was 113,300, up by 0.56% on a year-on-year basis. The total assets value reached 130.9 billion yuan, up by 14.63%. The total indebtedness was 70.2 billion yuan, up by 14.02% on a year-on-year basis. In November 2008, there were 4,231 enterprises in cultural, educational and sports goods industry. The number of employees was 132,900, up by 8.27% on a year-on-year basis. The total assets value reached 151.3 billion yuan, up by 10.47% on a year-on-year basis. The total indebtedness was 82.3 billion yuan, up by 8.28% on a year-on-year basis. The total indebtedness growth rate in this industry saw a steady decline in 2008.

In November 2008, toy manufacturing enterprises peaked at 1,718, accounting for 40.61% in cultural, educational and sports goods industry. There were 1,107 sports goods manufacturing enterprises, accounting for 26.16%, and 992 cultural goods manufacturing enterprises for 23.45%. The number of instrument manufacturing enterprises and entertainment facilities and amusement articles enterprises was relatively small. Toy manufacturing employed 77,700 people in November, up by 17.41% on a year-on-year basis. Sports goods manufacturing employed 30,500 people, down by 1.61% on a year-on-year basis. Cultural goods manufacturing employed 15,500 people, down by 5.45% on a year-on-year basis. The total assets value of toy manufacturing was the highest (59.4 billion yuan) in November, up by 13.15% on a year-on-year basis. The total assets of sports goods manufacturing were 43.9 billion yuan, up by 10.42% on a year-on-year basis. The total assets of cultural goods manufacturing were 29.9 billion yuan, up by 8.78% on a year-on-year basis. Toy manufacturing had the largest total indebtedness of 31.5 billion yuan in November, up by 9.08% on a year-on-year basis. The total indebtedness of sports goods manufacturing was 25.2 billion yuan, up by 10.42% on a year-on-year basis. The total indebtedness of cultural goods manufacturing was 15.9 billion yuan, up by 7.33% on a year-on-year basis. The total indebtedness of instrument manufacturing enterprises and entertainment facilities and amusement articles enterprises were 6.6 billion yuan and 2.9 billion yuan respectively.

      1. Production and sales


In February 2008, the total output value of cultural, educational and sports goods industry reached 29.95 billion yuan, up by 20.25% on a year-on-year basis. In November, the cumulative output value was 216.902 billion yuan, up by 14.09% on a year-on-year basis. In February, the sales value of cultural, educational and sports goods industry was 28.695 billion yuan, up by 17.15% on a year-on-year basis. In November, the cumulative sales value was 205.903 billion yuan, up by 13.74% on a year-on-year basis. The sales-output ratio of this industry was 95.81% in February, and dropped slightly to 94.93% in November. The value of manufactured goods in February was 9.603 billion yuan, up by 11.05% on a year-on-year basis. In November the value became 12.254 billion yuan, up by 5.45% on a year-on-year basis.

In November 2008, the output value of toy manufacturing was 96, 68 billion yuan, accounting for 44.57% and up by 13.3% on a year-on-year basis. The output value of sports goods manufacturing was 62, 5 billion yuan, accounting for 28.81%, and up by 18.31% on a year-on-year basis. The output value of cultural goods manufacturing was 36,731 billion yuan, accounting for 16.93% and up by 9.54% on a year-on-year basis。The total value of instrument manufacturing and entertainment facilities and amusement articles manufacturing was relatively small. The sales-output ratio of instrument manufacturing was 97.52%. The sales-output ratios of cultural goods manufacturing and sports goods manufacturing were 95.88% and 96.74% respectively. The manufactured goods value of toy manufacturing was as large as 4,921 billion yuan in November, up by 14.7% on a year-on-year basis. The manufactured goods vale of cultural manufacturing and sports goods manufacturing were 2,288 billion yuan and 3,969 billion yuan respectively, up by 5.45% and 8.97% on a year-on-year basis. The manufactured goods value of instrument manufacturing and entertainment and amusement facilities manufacturing saw a rapid growth.

      1. Costs and expenses


In February 2008, the sales costs of cultural, educational and sports goods industry reached 25,177 billion yuan, up by 16.95% on a year-on-year basis. In November, the cumulative sales costs stood at 182,030 billion yuan, up by 13.94% on a year-on-year basis. The sales expenses in February approached 757 million yuan, up by 12.99% on a year-on-year basis. The cumulative sales expenses in November were 4.964 billion yuan, up by 12.41% on a year-on-year basis. In February 2008, the management expenses and financial costs of cultural, educational and sports goods industry were 1.602 billion yuan and 356 million yuan respectively, up by 16.98% and 69.03% on a year-on-year basis. The cumulative management expenses and financial costs in November were 9.852 billion yuan and 1.621 billion yuan respectively, up by 11.48% and 10.49% on a year-on-year basis.

The sales costs of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry in November 2008 reached 80.318 billion yuan, up by 14.11% on a year-on-year basis. The sales costs of cultural goods manufacturing was 30.497 billion yuan, up by 9.23% on a year-on-year basis. The sales costs of sports goods manufacturing were 53.81 billion yuan, up by 17.65% on a year-on-year basis. The sales costs of instrument manufacturing and amusement and entertainment facilities manufacturing were 12.424 billion yuan and 4.981 billion yuan respectively. The sales expense of cultural goods manufacturing was 1.815billion yuan, up by 15.77%on a year-on-year basis. The sales expense of cultural goods manufacturing was 1.07 billion yuan, up by13.95% on a year-on-year basis. The sales expense of sports goods manufacturing was 1.581 billion yuan, up by 15.4% on a year-on-year basis. In November, the management expenses and financial costs of toy manufacturing were 4.224 billion yuan and 518 million yuan respectively, up by 11.33% and 9.46% on a year-on-year basis. The management expenses of cultural goods manufacturing were1.721 billion yuan, up by 10.26% on a year-on-year basis. The management expenses of sports goods manufacturing were 2.86 billion yuan, up by 15.13% on a year-on-year basis.

      1. Profits


In February 2008, the cumulative profits of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry reached 612 million yuan, up by 9.79% on a year-on-year basis. In November, the cumulative profits were 5.404 billion yuan, up by 4.92% on a year-on-year basis. In February 2008, 1,178 enterprises or 29.06 % of all the companies suffered losses. In November, the cumulative number of enterprises in the red was 1,036 for 24.29% of all the companies. The loss-suffering scale was declining. In February 2008, the total loss reached 533 million yuan, up by 29.51% on a year-on-year basis. In November, the cumulative loss reached 1.744 million yuan, up by 26.11% on a year-on-year basis. The loss kept a high growth.

In November 2008, toy manufacturing realized the most profit of 2.039 billion yuan, up by 14.98% on a year-on-year basis. Cultural goods manufacturing realized a profit of 1.217 billion yuan, up by 7.03% on a year-on-year basis. Sports goods manufacturing realized a profit of 1.307 billion yuan, up by 1.01% on a year-on-year basis. The profits of instrument manufacturing and amusement and entertainment facilities manufacturing were 563 million yuan and 277 million yuan, respectively. Toy manufacturing saw relatively more loss-suffering enterprises of 436 with a scale proportion of 25.38%. Cultural goods manufacturing had 122 loss-suffering enterprises with a scale proportion of 21.77%. Instrument manufacturing and amusement and entertainment facilities manufacturing had a relatively small loss scale. Toy manufacturing suffered a loss of 717 million yuan, up by 33.69% on a year-on-year basis. Cultural goods manufacturing suffered a loss of 256 million yuan, up by 15.06% on a year-on-year basis. Sports goods manufacturing suffered a loss of 630 million yuan, up by 24.19% on a year-on-year basis. Instrument manufacturing suffered a loss of 22.41% on a year-on-year basis. Instrument manufacturing and amusement and entertainment facilities manufacturing suffered a loss of 33 million yuan, up by 15.15% on a year-on-year basis。

      1. Operation performance


In February 2008, the product sales revenue of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry grew at 17.15%, down by 3.92 percentage point on a year-on-year basis. In November, the product sales revenue grew at 13.74%, down by 6.84 percentage points on a year-on-year basis. The sales revenue of this industry was dropping down. In February 2008, the value-added ratio of capital maintenance was 115.34%, up by 1.92 percentage points on a year-on-year basis. In November, the ratio became 113.2%, down by 1.34 percentage point on a year-on-year basis. In February 2008, the asset-liability ratio of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry was 53.63%, down by 0.69 percentage point on a year-on-year basis. In November, the asset-liability ratio was 54.36%, down by 1.39 percentage point on a year-on-year basis. In February 2008, the net amount growth rate of accounts receivable was 0.34%, up by 17.36 percentage points. In November, the rate was 0.53%, down by 11.61 percentage points on a year-on-year basis. The net amount growth rate of accounts receivable saw a sharp drop.

      1. Investment in fixed assets


The cumulative investment in fixed assets of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry in 2008 approached 19.555 billion yuan, up by 12.70% on a year-on-year basis. In February, the cumulative investment in fixed assets was 12.63 billion yuan, up by 30.75% on a year-on-year basis, the highest speed throughout the year. In May, the cumulative investment in fixed assets was 5.896 billion yuan, up by 0.02% on a year-on-year basis. In general, the investment in fixed assets of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry in 2008 saw an obvious upheaval.

In 2008, Guangdong achieved 75.331 billion yuan output value of cultural, educational and sports goods manufacturing industry, accounting for 34.73% of the industry’s total output, the highest in the country, up by 11.09% on a year-on-year basis. The total output value of Jiangsu was 33.739 billion yuan, accounting for 15.55%, up by 19.22% on a year-one-year basis. The total output value of this industry was relatively large in Zhejiang, Shandong and Shanghai. In this year, Beijing ranked the first in China in sales-output ratio of 119.09%, followed by Jilin, Guizhou, Yunnan and Shaanxi. The ratio of Guangxi was 56.06% as the lowest in China. Sichuan, Henan and Gansu had a relatively low sales-output ratio.
