It does not matter where in the world we look for a job, being able to speak fluent English gives
us a specific edge over the competition. Attending classes that specifically teach English for tourism
industry employees is one of the best ways to obtain this fluency.
Hotel guests often ask for directions related to the comforts provided within the hotel. They may
want to request a particular service, or raise a complaint, or ask for local travel arrangements. As a
hotel employee, we need to be able to answer them in a calm and polite manner, providing correct
information that the guests can understand. Often, we may not mean annoying the guests but may end
up doing exactly this when we are unable to communicate correctly in English. If a visitor is already
angry, we should know the right things to say in good English or they may get even more irritated and
decide our hotel’s service is not good enough.
When we learn English for promotion, we will find ourself more confident in communicating
with guests as well as the hotel staff and this confidence will soon ensure our career advancement.
But tourism also has some major disadvantages like destruction of popular tourist destinations
and development of illegal economic activities. Ancient buildings and monuments can get damaged
by vast amount of visitors. The main disadvantage is the extinction of localism. It is possible to make
English the primary language of a country, it is really difficult for every country to attain the level of
fluency as a native speaker. Moreover, the accent differs from one country to another. For instance,
Canada, Australia, and the US have English as their primary language. However, they have difference
in their accent. Also, the large number of tourists can cause environmental problems. For instance,
when places of interest are overcrowded, natural resources often become overexploited. However,

proper hospitality management and correct usage of tourism revenue by the local government can
eliminate these disadvantages.
In conclusion, a single universal language is definitely beneficial for every country and improves
the relationship among them, but it also might be certainly harmful for the local language and might
damage the local culture in future.
