wHAT MOTIvATES STUDENTS
IN LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Annotation:
The main aim of this article is to maintain the main objectives and peculiarities of
how students get motivated in learning a particular language.

Motivation is one of the most important factors which influence language learner’s success or
failure in learning the language.
For language learning student’s motivation can be understood as learner’s orientation with regard
to the goal of learning as second language. Teachers should try every means to better initiate student’s
motivation and bring their motivation to a full range in the classroom language. Moreover, language
teacher cannot effectively teach a language if they do not understand the relationship between moti-
vation and its effect language learning. There are a lot effective ways to increase language learner’s
external motivation:
1.Create a friendly atmosphere
If in the classroom would be friendly climate in which all students feel recognized and valued,
they feel more comportable participating in the classroom activities after they know their teacher and
their peers. Creating such environment where everyone feels like a part of the whole is one of the
most significientfactors in encouring motivation.
2 Creating situations in which students will feel a sense of accomplishment
A sense of accomplishment is a great factor in motivating students. Teachers should be sure to
give positive feedback and reinforcement. Doing so they can increase student’s satisfaction and en-
courage positive self-evaluation. A student who feels a sense of accomplishment will be better able to
direct his or her own studies and learning outcomes. Positive and also negative comments influence
motivation. Giving positive feedback should not be for correcting mistakes without giving explana-
tions.
3.Provide Pair and Group activities to develop student’s confidence.
Students learn by doing, making, writing, designing, creating and solving. Passivity decreases
student’s motivation and curiosity. Student’s enthusiasm, involvement and willingness to participate
affect the quality of class discussion as a opportunity for learning. Small group activities and also pair
work boost student’s self-confidence and are excellent source of motivation. Group activities allow
students not only to express their ideas but also to work cooperatively which increases class cohesion
and motivation.
In conclusion, Motivation fluctuate sand it is challenging to keep language learner’s motivation
at high level all the time. When designing a language course, teachers should take into consideration
that each student has different interest and expectations.
