Methodology
This study investigated the Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivations of students in terms of learning 
the English language in YTIT. The questionnaire consists of eight questions. The first two questions 
are related to the demographic part. Furthermore, the students’ motivations were evaluated by two 
parts, Intrinsic and Extrinsic, that include the other six questions. The questions related to Intrinsic are 
adapted by I-Fan Liu & Shelley S.-C. Young (Liu & Young, 2017) and Extrinsic from R.C. Gardner 
(Robert C. Gardner, 1985). 
After age and gender questions, three questions “I enjoy reading in English language”, “I wish 
I could speak English language excellently”, “Studying English language is enjoyable experience” 
statements were used for identifying Intrinsic motivations and following three questions “I feel learn-
ing English is helpful for my future career”, “I think English is helpful to study abroad”, “I have more 
chance to win scholarships or awards by knowing English” statements were for Extrinsic motivation.
In this research, Likert scale questions from the 3rd and till the 8th were used to identify and show 
the respondents’ opinions. These questions are 5 point Likert scale, which includes the following an-
swers with indicated numbers: Strongly disagree – 1, Disagree – 2, Neutral – 3, Agree – 4, Strongly 
agree – 5. According to these numbers, the mean was calculated to describe data collected via Likers 
scale-type questions. The mean results between 1 – 1.8 represent Strongly disagree, 1.8 – 2.60 rep-
resents Disagree, 2.61 – 3.40 Neutral, 3.41 – 4.20 represents Agree, 4.21 – 5 represents Strongly 
agree.
The participants were 50 undergraduate students with bachelor’s degrees. There were 25 male 
and 25 female students. The data was gathered in the survey method via Google form. The research 
method is descriptive. All the data analyzed by SPSS, and the mean measurement was applied.
