Word Order as a Gender Stereotype

The interest towards the issues of language and gender pushed forward the problem of the form and content of women’s and men’s linguistic portraits. Naturally enough, beliefs about both genders have been closely associated with gender stereotypes, having been established in a given culture. It is true that language only partially reflects societal reality; however, it is also true that lexis, metaphors and other semantic or semantisized linguistic phenomena make up a certain well-ordered system of beliefs in which we, speakers of a language, are deeply rooted with our cognition. This is why certain preferences, occurring in language, frequently take on social dimensions.
Western Language and Gender research has almost unanimously accepted the approach that only the following principles will be applied for the construction of women’s and men’s linguistic portraits: ‘male as a norm, a postulate’ and ‘female as secondary.’ Obviously enough, such principles were identified as a result of the study of certain individual languages; however, later there were attempts to universalize them. Irrespective of the fact that Georgian Gender Linguistics is based on chronologically anterior research, conducted in western countries, it does not imply that all those principles should be axiomatically accepted.
In order to shed more light, the paper addresses the problem of word order in English sentences referring to both women and men. Besides, the emphasis is laid upon how the existing word order is perceived and assessed by various authors.
With a view to the fact that translation has some intercultural implications, I decided to check the stability of the said word order in English within a certain trans-cultural context. For the sake of this, I selected an appropriate English sentence and asked subjects to translate it. The sentence was translated into several languages differing genetically, typologically and/or areally. The paper presents the results of the experiment.
