Fluency Strategy: KWL 
Readers can ask themselves three questions to improve their reading fluency and 
comprehension. The letters K, W, and L can be used to remind you of these questions. KWL 
stands for Know, Want, Learn. 
Know 
The first step of KWL is similar to the Survey stage in SQ3R (page 161) and the A in the ACTIVE 
approach (inside front cover). This step will help you prepare yourself before reading.

The extract below is from the article on page 109. From the title and first paragraph, decide, 
"What is the topic of the passage?" 
America's Biggest Lottery Winner 
One day in December 2002, Jack Whittaker decided to buy a lottery ticket 
at a small store in West Virginia. The 5 5-year-old didn't really need to as he 
was already a successful and affluent businessman. But Whittaker played 
the lottery that day because the prize was truly a fortune- $314 million. 
The next morning he learned he had won it all-the largest lottery win in 
the history of the United States at that time.
