De Munk F G, & Kweifio-Okai G, 1997, The development of an in vitro model for arthritis, (New), Laboratory models for arthritis involve the use of animals and the creation of inflammatory lesions in their joints. These models are unsatisfactory for ethical reasons. An in vitro model would enable the screening of drugs as well as the ability to control environmental factors. The potential of a line of osteogenic rat sarcoma cells growing in culture to serve as such a model is being investigated.

De Munk F G, 1997, Environmental practice and the role of the Occupational Health and Safety professional, (New), Occupational Health and Safety professionals operate in an increasingly multidisciplinary work environment. This project seeks to determine the extent of employer expectations upon safety professionals regarding environmental science and practice. RMIT occupational health and safety graduates will be surveyed and recommendations regarding curriculum changes in safety courses may be made.

De Munk F G, & Kweifio-Okai G, 1997, The effect of triterpenes derived from the root barks of Alstonia boonei on cell cultures of rat osteogenic sarcoma, (Continuing), The potential of plant triterpene compounds to act as antiarthritic drugs is being investigated in vitro. Rat osteosarcoma cells behave biochemically and histologically as arthritic tissue. The distribution of faecal pellets and the contents of these pellets are being analysed, using confocal scanning laser microscopy, to determine habitat selection and dietary requirements of the two species throughout the seasons.

After data analysis has occurred a program based on the emergent risk control hierarchy will be developed to overcome impediments and accentuate facilitating factors in the implementation of risk control. Two risks will be assessed, an immediate consequence risk: "falls from heights", and a delayed effect risk: "occupational skin diseases".

The literature method of preparation from thiols and nitrogen dioxide has been found to give product containing much disulfide. A much better procedure using ethyl nitrite and sodium hydroxide catalyst gives pure product that is also more stable. Spectroscopic properties of thionitrites have been studied.
