  1. Typical methods and ways to translate phraseological units;

  2. Basic considerations of the ways to translate of phraseological units:

  1. word-for-word (verbatim) translation;

  2. translation by analogy;

  3. descriptive translation.


The aim of lesson: Providing basic information on the ways of translation of phraseological units.

Pedagogical objectives

The results of training activity

  • Presenting general information on the typical ways of translation of phraseological units.

  • Providing the data connected with the general considerations of the ways of translation of phraseological units;

  • Describing the cases illustrating the use of word-for-word translation of phraseological units;

  • Describing the cases illustrating the use of translation of phraseological units by analogy;

  • Describing the cases illustrating the use of descriptive translation of phraseological units;




  • Outlining and clarifying typical ways of translation of phraseological units;


  • Systematizing data on the main ways of translation of phraseological units;


  • Clarifying the distinctive features of cases with a word-for-word reproduction of the SL phraseological units in the TL;




  • Clarifying the distinctive features of cases with translation of phraseological units by analogy;

  • Revealing and clarifying the distinctive features of cases with descriptive translation of phraseological units (explication of phraseological unit’s figurative meaning);
