Subject matter of translation. Different trends in the theory of translation. General and special branches of theory of translation. Translation as an act of communication. Types of meaning and their influence to the process of translation. Problems of contextual, dictionary, emotive meanings in translation.

The aim of the lesson: Providing students with the fundamental information on the theory of translation as a separate academic discipline.

Presenting information on the general theoretical fundamentals of Translation studies; Giving basic data on the aim and tasks of the academic discipline; Providing a brief information on the main trends of the theory of translation; Giving the basic information on the types of translation; Presenting data on the issues of translation as an act of communication.	Characterizing the subject matter of Translation studies; Outlining the theoretical bases of translation studies; Telling the aim of the scientific discipline and commenting on its key tasks; Characterizing the main trends of the theory of translation; Characterizing and identifying the types of translation; Characterizing translation as an act of communication and clarifying its basic components;
