The differences between obsolete and archaic words in English
Introduction
We often see new words being added to dictionaries, but at the same time, some words become obsolete and as a result, linguists remove such words from dictionaries. Sometimes in historical texts we come across unfamiliar words and try to know their meaning. Due to the constant change of language and culture, such words sometimes give way to another, and sometimes go out of use altogether. We can find such words only in poetic works or historical texts. But nomads, who are not experts in this field, understood old-fashioned words only as words that were out of everyday speech and were no longer used in a particular language.
However, there are similar types of words. In the following research proposal, we will explore the differences between obsolete and archaic words in English, their developmental periods, stylistics, and semantic problems. In addition, we will contribute to the development of the industry by making additions to the opinions of experts working in this field.
Research problem.
Although many words are removed from ordinary dictionaries because they are out of use, they are remained in poetry, historical novels, and even English dialects. In fact, we divide obsolete words into 2 types. They are: archaisms and historical terms (historisms). However, the authors prefer to use the terms archaism and obsolete words more. In most cases, when we encounter obsolete or archaic words, we cannot distinguish whether it is an archaic or an obsolete word. Therefore, in our proposed research, we will work on exactly how these two terms can be distinguished from each other?
Research questions:
During the writing of the research, we will look for answers to the following questions:
1. How do you know if a word is obsolete and how many obsolete words in English.
2. What are the principal characteristics of archaic words.
